How is Web 3.0 Different to Web 2.0 and Web 1.0?

January 1, 1983, is largely considered the birthday of the World Wide Web. Prior to this, the few computer networks that existed didn't have a standard way to communicate with each other. It was in January 1983 that a new communications protocol was introduced and this was referred to as Transfer Control Protocol. Since then, the internet has evolved and continues to evolve every single day.

The first stage of the internet is known as Web 1.0 and was dedicated to connecting information and getting people on the internet while the second stage, Web 2.0, was about connecting people (not just information).

As opposed to the first stage of the internet, mostly made up of static web pages with no communication between users, Web 2.0 introduced Facebook and a variety of social media networking sites. This allowed the space to become more dynamic, allowing users to participate in the space as opposed to simply watching the space. The problem with Web 2.0 is that data is saved in a centralized system meaning that if the main organization or server crashes, users are completely unable to access their information.

Today, we are quickly heading into the Web 3.0 era and this new stage is set to empower users further and connect knowledge, making our experience of the internet more relevant and useful. Essentially, Web 3.0 is about the decentralization of the internet and puts the user in greater control than ever before.

Let’s take a deeper look at the different stages of the internet and how Web 3.0 will change the way society at large communicates and shares information.

The Rise of Web 3.0

The world is more connected than ever before and as we head into the new normal, everything is turning more and more digital, and this is what Web 3.0 fully encapsulates.

Web 1.0 was all about introducing the world to personal and home computers, while Web 2.0 set the stage for social media communication, marketing and engagement and now Web 3.0 is introducing the world to an era of blockchain technology and decentralized applications.

Today, we are seeing a significant rise in blockchain platforms that can decentralize just about all aspects of our lives. Essentially, the world is preparing to blur the distinction between physical and digital objects and content. But that’s not all. This new internet era comes with an array of significant benefits that will change the game for individuals and businesses across the globe.

The Benefits of Web 3.0

Data Ownership: Over the years, digital and online powerhouses like Google, controlled user-generated data and in the age of Web 3.0, users are able to take ownership of their data using Web 3.0 due to blockchain technology. This means that data sent over the network can be encrypted and users are able to choose the information they want to share with advertising companies - and make money from it.

Data Protection and Anti Monopoly: Web 3.0 includes data protection models and promotes non-centralized operating systems that are able to keep user data controlled. With this in mind, there will be a frontline shift thanks to decentralization and privacy and the monopoly of digital powerhouses will come to an end.

Seamless Service: With Web 3.0, the suspension of accounts becomes reduced as there is no predetermined endpoint. Essentially, multiple backups will prevent server failure or hijacking - ensuring safe and secure data.

Accessible: This new internet doesn't have a central power and anyone can participate in the network by creating an address. This means that the possibility of blocking a user based on income, gender, location or other social factors is eliminated. This also enables a quick and cost-effective transfer of digital assets - even across borders.

Now that we understand the difference between Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0, and we have investigated the benefits of the latest internet era, let’s take a look at what features you can expect from Web 3.0.

Notable Features of Web 3.0

The emerging technologies of the new age are coming together to create the core elements of Web 3.0, allowing space for a decentralized and semantic internet. These technologies include cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, NFTs and the Metaverse.

With that in mind, let's take a look at 3 key features you can expect to find with Web 3.0.

1. Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a part of our everyday lives thanks to online chatbots and apps like Siri and Alexa. But AI is going even further and is playing its part in helping us explore the web. Essentially, thanks to AI and natural language processing, businesses all across the globe will be able to reach their customers faster and with greater relevance.

2. Semantic Web

This is the next step in the evolution of the internet and enhances the functionality as well as the accessibility of websites. The Semantic Web allows its users to be even more effective and precise when searching for online content and allows them to search for information or data based on exact meaning rather than just keywords.

3. Three Dimensional

Three-dimensional design is quickly revolutionizing the digital landscape and transforming industries as 3D graphics allow users to enter digital spaces such as museums, computer games, eCommerce shops and more. This, combined with Virtual Reality, is soon to be the new normal.
