How Companies Are Making The Most Of Social Distancing

Social distancing and quarantine has become the new norm. Schools, universities, recreational centers and even companies are shutting down or adopting work from home practices. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a domino effect, impacting businesses and individuals alike. Businesses are facing a slump or have come to a screeching halt, especially some within the B2C sectors.

However, it's no surprise that certain industries such as the telecommunication, online gaming, e-learning, online delivery and streaming industries have seen a surge in users. While companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Minecraft and Skype have always enjoyed a substantial number of users worldwide, we’ve seen numerous apps taking over the charts this past month. Houseparty is one such example, having seen a 500% growth in application downloads between the week of March 2nd and March 9th.

On the other hand, companies such as Fitness First, Audible and LinkedIn have started providing free or discounted subscriptions to help people get through quarantine. This move not only benefits users, but also the companies. Here is how:

1 - A sense of goodwill

While self isolation is the best option we have right now to control the outbreak, research has shown that it can cause possible mental, physiological and even physical effects. Research has shown that self isolation and lack of social interaction is said to increase depression and anxiety and with restrictions or curfews in place for many, the lack of physical movement as a consequence of this is also linked to irritation, sadness and other emotional outbursts, while also taking a toll on heart and muscle mass.

As a result, gyms, yoga and other fitness centers have moved to online platforms and are providing free instructional videos to everyone until quarantine comes to an end. This not only helps users fight the side effects of quarantine but also helps to position the brand in a positive light, which increases the chances of users continuing with their service after the trial period.

2 - Reaching potential customers

With more spare time than previously was the case, people have been investing more time in developing their hobbies, checking off their to-do list or even picking up new hobbies and brands that support this behavior will no doubt reach new audiences that may convert into loyal customers in the post-crisis era. For example, those who like listening to audio books and audio based content in general may turn to companies such as Audible, who are providing hundreds of free titles increasing chances of paid subscription after this period.

3 - Integrating themselves into adapting habits

It’s no surprise that daily routines and habits have been thrown into disarray with self isolation and work from home implementation. While people try to hold on to as many of these as possible, they’ve moved to find alternate digital solutions to their traditional problems. With companies providing free online solutions to users, they are likely to integrate themselves into the routines of users, who are likely to continue usage of mobile apps and digital platforms once we’re out of these difficult situations.

Whether it's a commercial decision or companies just trying to help, we applaud it!

It’s truly remarkable seeing companies and businesses prioritizing the interests of their users and communities, while trying to navigate through these difficult times. Many of these platforms are making it easier for us to help curb the outbreak by staying indoors and maintaining social distancing, which is very important.

If you haven't tried any of the apps mentioned above or any others that are providing extended free-trial periods, then give it a try. After all, what better way to entertain yourself during self-isolation than to try out the free apps out there?
